2,100 Flights Delayed and Cancelled in US as Extreme Weather Continues

Major US airports all experience severe delays and cancellations in a single day because of weather

2,100 flights were delayed and cancelled in the US in a single day, as the bout of extreme weather hitting the country continues, this time in the Northeast and mid-Atlantic regions of the US, disrupting La Guardia, Charlotte-Douglas, Reagan-National, Boston-Logan and JFK airports.

The extreme weather swept through the northeast and mid-Atlantic, bringing with it lightning strikes, low cloud ceilings, wind shear, and intermittent ground stops that together combined to disrupt flight schedules, the Travel and Tour World reports.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued several traffic management initiatives, halting inbound traffic to La Guardia and JFK during peak hours, while Boston-Logan and Reagan-National faced limited runaway operations.

La Guardia recorded the highest number of disruptions in the day, with 672 delayed flights and 42 cancellations, as reported by Travel and Tour World. Republic Airways, a handler of regional operations for many major carriers, faced the most disruption to their schedule, with 28 flight cancellations and 223 delays.

There were 77 aircraft on the ground at the airport yesterday, with a market value of $2 billion, according to analysis by ALPS Aerospace Visualiser.

Charlotte-Douglas International Airport was the second most affected airport yesterday, recording 367 delayed flights and 57 cancellations, according to Travel and Tour World. The airport is a key hub for American Airlines, which had 132 delays and 31 cancellations.

American Airlines had 83 aircraft on the ground at the airport yesterday, with a market value of $2 billion, according to analysis by ALPS Aerospace Visualiser.

Meanwhile, Boston-Logan recorded 301 delays and 31 cancellations, with international carriers including Etihad, Iberia, Air France, Qatar and Turkish Airlines experiencing delays ranging from 25% to 50% of their operations, TTW reports.

Reagan-National Airport racked up 301 delays and 31 cancellations and JFK recorded 296 delays and 25 cancellations, with international carriers including Virgin Atlantic, Qatar, Air France, Air India, Emirates, Swiss and Lufthansa all impacted.

With summer travel demand expected to reach peak levels and with the 4th of July weekend on the horizon, airlines and airports will be nervously monitoring weather systems in the coming weeks, as more pop-up storms have been forecasted.

Travelers to JFK, La Guardia, Boston, Reagan and Charlotte, have all been advised to arrive early at the airports for their flights and prepare for potential delays.
